Port Morien Bird Sanctuary

ACAP Cape Breton’s Migratory Bird Sanctuary Project was developed to inform residents of the Port Morien area about the impact their activities may have on migratory birds and other species within the Port Morien Migratory Bird Sanctuary.

Aside from educating the public through school presentations and community events, ACAP Cape Breton is developing a migratory bird observation post, notifying residents about the types of birds that occupy Port Morien Beach.

Illegal dumping along the length of Port Morien’s barrier beach and within the migratory bird sanctuary has led to a build up of garbage. Consequently, local wildlife and migratory birds are exposed to potential hazards, including toxic substances. Through Habitat Restoration, ACAP Cape Breton’s Migratory Bird Sanctuary Project is helping to minimize such dangers by hosting two volunteer-based beach clean ups in November 2007.

By continuing to work with Port Morien, ACAP Cape Breton will enhance the Port Morien Beach, ensuring it remains clean and safe. It is hoped this project will empower citizens of Port Morien to make responsible choices with regards to the Port Morien Migratory bird Sanctuary.
