Greening Mira Provincial Park

Nova Scotia Provincial Park Solid Waste Management Project:

In 2006, ACAP Cape Breton partnered with Pepsi (Cape Breton Beverages) and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources to create a pilot project to develop a solid waste management system for Mira River Provincial Camping Park. The pilot project was designed to ensure compliance with the Nova Scotia solid waste-resource management regulations made under section 102 of the Environment Act.

In the summer of 2007, an ACAP Cape Breton employee began implementing the project. This 11 week project commenced the second year of an ongoing partnership between Mira River Provincial Park, Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and ACAP Cape Breton.

An assembly of waste sorting bags was distributed to campers as they were issued a permit in the main office. Inserted visibly in the package was a concise sorting guide tailored specifically to camp waste. This allowed continued public education.

Within the 11 week period the solid waste management system in Mira River Provincial Park made excellent progress. All involved parties became better educated to properly divert each of their waste streams and helped bring the park leaps and bounds closer to meeting the requirements of the CBRM’s Solid Waste Resource Management By-Law. This program will continue to improve as it evolves over the next number of seasons and will surely set the precedent for waste management policies in other campgrounds across Nova Scotia.
