Winter Tree ID Workshop / Watershed Walk

January 21, 2019

ACAP Cape Breton and the CBRM Water Utility invite the community to a free winter tree identification workshop in the woods surrounding Pottle Lake, the tap water source lake for communities on the Northside. This informative walk through the watershed will take place on Saturday, January 26th at 11:00AM. Participants will meet at 87 Johnson Road, North Sydney and enter the forest from the Old Branch Road.

“One of the easiest ways to identify tree species is by looking at their leaves. In the winter months when tree branches are bare, this isn’t possible”, says Elizabeth Jessome, project specialist at ACAP Cape Breton. “On Saturday we will use our senses of touch, sight, and smell to identify different tree species growing in Pottle Lake forest”.

Do you know where your tap water comes from? Watershed Walks are a series of exploratory hikes in the watersheds that supply CBRM tap water. These walks are designed not only to introduce us to our local water sources but to really get to know them. Each walk informs participants in field identification skills for plants and/or wildlife to enhance our connection to the source of the tap water we use every day.
