Wayne Williams, one of ACAP Cape Breton’s longest running employees, started working at ACAP in 2002 as an Environmental Supervisor. Within two years he moved up and began his role as Environmental Manager.
As ACAP Cape Breton’s Environmental Manager, Wayne oversees all science and monitoring projects, all restoration projects, as well as writing proposals and reports and monitoring various other outdoor jobs. While his main role is to direct staff, he enjoys getting out in the field and providing demonstrations on how to complete a variety of tasks efficiently and safely.
Wayne has always had an interest in nature and loves spending time outdoors; therefore, it was no surprise when he pursued an education in environmental technology. Wayne has an Environmental Technology Diploma from Memorial University, a Bachelor of Environmental Technology Degree from Cape Breton University, as well as a Watercourse Alteration Certificate from the Maritime College of Forest Technology and a Terrestrial Ecosystem Monitoring Protocols course from Acadia University.
An extensive education, along with a combined 8 years of work experience with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the Department of Environment, has made Wayne a true asset to ACAP Cape Breton.
In September of 2002, both Dan MacKinnon and Bruce Young started at ACAP Cape Breton with the Community Employment Innovation Program. Through this program they not only coordinated an illegal dumpsite clean up project, but also worked as home energy evaluators, leading them to their next phase at ACAP Cape Breton as Certified Energy Advisors.
Bruce and Dan assist home owners in making their homes more energy efficient by performing home energy assessments and making recommendations to homeowners on how to conserve energy.
Both Bruce and Dan possess broad backgrounds in construction so it is no surprise that they were able to make ACAP Cape Breton’s Home Energy Assessment Program an immense success. In combination with a National Certification from the Energuide for Houses Program, their knowledge of houses, which includes extensive work experience in the carpentry industry, enables Bruce and Dan to deliver accurate, detailed assessments to homeowners.
While their careers share many similarities, outside of work Bruce and Dan have distinct interests. Dan loves wood working, a talent he lends to ACAP on a regular basis by crafting recycling centers. Bruce, aside from taking the role as ACAP’s internal event planner, has devoted 19 years to South Bar Volunteer Fire Department.
Shawn‘s journey at ACAP Cape Breton began in 2003 as IT support. Since that time his position has evolved to encompass the roles of manager of the Electronic Recycling Program and Network Administrator.
ACAP Cape Breton's Electronic Recycling Program (formerly known as the electronic swap) has grown progressively under Shawn's guidance. In 2007-2008 alone the program refurbished and distributed over 500 PC systems to the general public as well as a vast number of televisions, gaming consoles, stereos and other electronics.
Shawn’s extensive background, along with 16 years of experience in information technology makes him a valuable asset to ACAP Cape Breton, performing his duties with utmost success. He has a diploma in information technology as well as being Microsoft certified as a computer systems engineer, Microsoft certified Windows professional, Microsoft certified master in MS Office, CompTIA certified network technician, CompTIA certified PC technician and holds an ICDL license as a computer instructor.
As for Shawn’s feelings towards ACAP Cape Breton he says, “My position at ACAP Cape Breton has been one of the most rewarding I have had, not only does my family get to remain in Cape Breton but I get to work in my chosen field of information technology. It also provides great satisfaction to know that I am helping our environment."

Although Maureen was an honors student at the Nova Scotia Community College, where she won the President’s Award and obtained a Diploma in Office Information Technology, it was her work experience that truly prepared her for her position at ACAP Cape Breton.
Working as an Office Manager for the Cape Breton Federation of Agriculture and St. Matthew-Wesley United Church and volunteering as a Secretary for the Barra Community Development Association, has given Maureen the work experience needed to excel in her position.
