WASTEWATER
The matter formerly known as sewer.
Not to be confused with wasting water…
What is it and why should we care?
50 MILLION LITRES. That is how much wastewater is produced everyday in the CBRM.
Wastewater is all of the water you flush down your toilet, drain out your sink and see running down the storm drain.
It’s any water that’s been affected by us.
Wastewater is treated both through man-made and natural processes, and recycled back into the environment.
In the CBRM, there are three treatment plants (Sydney, Dominion and Bras d’Or) and five lagoons (Sydney, Centreville, Sydney Mines, Glace Bay and Birch Grove) which help treat the wastewater once it leaves our homes and streets.
Naturally, wastewater moves through the water cycle and is purified as it moves through earth, plants, animals, rivers, lakes and the ocean.
However, both of these processes can only handle so much pollution. We will always make wastewater but our responsibility is to ensure this wastewater is free of contaminants! There are better ways to dispose of food, fat, oil, grease, and medication and natural ways to deal with insects and weeds.
It’s our water. Treat it right.
