Family Fun: Bras d'Or Watch 2018!

The Bras d’Or Lakes include 3,500 square kilometers of open water, bays, barrier beaches and forest which is so unique that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) officially named it a biosphere in 2011. It is one of only eighteen places in Canada with this national designation.

Due to its uniqueness and the need to further explore the area and the plants and animals that inhabit it, the idea of the Bras d’Or Watch was formed four years ago by the Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve Association. In this project, residents are invited to learn about the unique ecology of the Bras d’Or Biosphere. The event is mutually beneficial for scientists and local residents. The event helps scientists keep records of species and their abundance, and citizens of the area become more engaged and connected with their community and ecosystem.

There are different surveys and fun activities suitable for all ages. Some people go into the water and try to catch different kinds of wonderful creatures there, and then get some information about them from scientists and naturalists who are supervising the event.

The event will be held in three main locations in 2018: Ben Eoin RV Park, Ross Ferry Marine Park, Whycocomagh, with a smaller community event in St. Peter’s. It will be held this year on July 14 from 10:00am-2:00pm.
