Environmental Education

School Programs

Through our environmental programming, we prioritize bringing students to the outdoors, and the outdoors to students. Our workshops are hands-on, engaging, and rooted in local environmental learning. If you are a teacher or school administrator with an idea for an environmental school project that falls outside of our regular programming, send us an email!

  • Our elementary school programming varies by grade level. Early elementary visits can include reading with Tappy and some basic water-based learning. Upper elementary (Grades 3-5) includes programs on water conservation and protection. Educator visits usually last between 45 minutes to an hour, but this can be adjusted based on classroom needs.

  • Our middle school programming focuses on wetlands and water. Students learn about the interconnections animals, their habitats, and environmental chemistry.

  • We offer two options for High School Programming: (1) Climate Change Education and (2) CABIN Science (CABIN = Canadian Biomonitoring Network).

We also work with student-run green teams and environmental clubs on special projects like tree planting, community clean-ups and more.

  • We currently offer Watershed Explorers field trips in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Students visit a local Source Water Watershed to learn hands-on science. The field trips include 1.5 to 2 hours in the forest, and we usually recommend a full morning or afternoon.

Source Water watersheds are freshwater collection zones that provide drinking water for our communities. The guiding concept behind Watershed Explorers is to introduce children to their water sources and engage them in hands-on environment science.

These programs take place in the late spring and early fall months. ACAP Cape Breton offers this program for free but spaces are limited. We offer bussing subsidies on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • We offer field trips to local wetlands in partnership with Ducks Unlimited. This program is targeted toward Grades 4-6 and is all costs are covered for participating classes. At this time, all of our wetland sites are located in Cape Breton county, but we are currently scouting sites in other locations.

Students learn about environmental monitoring in the forest and record their observations.

Students become stewards of a local watershed by participating in a litter clean-up.
