Emerging artist participation in an intergenerational learning project

ACAP Cape Breton is thrilled to pilot a new program in 2025. This initiative is designed to bring together seniors, Elders, and youth, allowing everyone to explore how a place has changed over time through the unique perspectives of seniors during a nature walk. ACAP Cape Breton will host a series of public walks where seniors and Elders will share their stories in four different languages: Mi’kmaw, French/Acadian, Scottish Gaelic, and English. Seniors are welcome to choose whichever language they prefer (and we'll happily arrange for translators), or they can teach the group a few phrases in their language if they'd prefer.

While ACAP Cape Breton will not predetermine the structure and content of each walk, we expect to see themes of change in special places over time, the importance of language for the survival (and thriving) of human and non-human communities, and the importance of sharing stories and knowledge across generations.

The role of the artist

We are looking for an emerging artist who is interested in helping us document the learning experiences in this intergenerational learning program. The artist would come along on each of the four walks with seniors and youth as observer and/or participant in the experience. Based on what they learn at each site, the artist will create a single print art piece, or alternatively, a series of print art pieces, that represent(s) the learning experience and the journey.

Requirements:

  • Participation in each of the four senior/youth walks. These may be held during the weekend, evening, or daytime. Our staff will work with each participating Elder/senior and the selected artist to schedule a date. The walks should last 1-2 hours in total; however, there will also be travel time to each location (e.g. Chéticamp, St. Peters, etc.).

  • Willingness to travel to the location of each walk, either on their own with mileage reimbursed or with an ACAP staff member.

  • Willing and able to create an art piece from which we can create prints to share with participating seniors/Elders and community partners.

*The type of art could be photography, painting, drawing, print-making, etc. As long as it can be captured in a print form to be shared with participants, it is acceptable. If you have an idea, and you’re not sure about it, please reach out to our team with your questions.

Expenses Covered:

  • $4,500 as support for the artist to attend walks and produce artwork, including use or purchase of supplies.

  • Mileage reimbursement is available for artists traveling in their own vehicle.

The cost of prints and any necessary framing will also be covered by ACAP through project expenses.

Submit a brief expression of interest (EOI) to communications[@]acapcb.ns.ca by:

20 May, 2025

What the EOI should include:

  • Brief description about what kind of artwork you are envisioning (1-2 paragraphs)

  • Brief description about your previous artistic experience. You can choose to share portfolio examples of work you’ve done, but this is not a requirement for the EOI.

Emerging Artist - Because this is an intergenerational learning project, preference will be given to an emerging artist or youth artist (30 or under).

Open to artists from anywhere in Unama’ki-Cape Breton.
